How to Cleanse and Charge Your Crystals
Crystals pick up energy from their surroundings, the people who handle them, and the work they do for you. Cleansing clears that built-up energy so your stones can return to their natural state, and charging restores their vibrancy. Here is a simple guide to keeping your crystals fresh.
Why cleanse your crystals?
Whether a crystal is new to you or has been part of your routine for years, regular cleansing keeps its energy clear and effective. Many people cleanse a stone when they first bring it home, after heavy use, or any time it feels energetically heavy.
Easy ways to cleanse
- Selenite: Place your crystals on a selenite charging plate or beside a selenite tower overnight. Selenite is self-cleansing and gently clears other stones.
- Smoke (smudging): Pass your crystal through the smoke of white sage or palo santo to clear its energy. See our sage and smudging tools.
- Moonlight: Set your crystals on a windowsill under the full moon overnight. Safe for almost every stone.
- Sound: Use a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork to wash your crystals in clearing vibration.
- Earth: Bury a stone in soil for 24 hours to ground and reset its energy.
A note on water and salt
Water and salt can damage softer or porous stones such as selenite, malachite, and angelite. When in doubt, choose a dry method like selenite, smoke, or moonlight.
Charging your crystals
Once cleansed, recharge your stones in brief sunlight (to avoid fading colored stones), moonlight, or on a selenite or clear quartz cluster. Set a clear intention as you do. This is what programs your crystal for the work ahead.
How often?
There is no strict rule. Cleansing once or twice a month is plenty for most people, with an extra cleanse after intense use or emotional days.
